Until Saturday, May 27, I'd only seen one ladder-backed woodpecker. It was in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Texas. On May 27 I was at the Sonny Bono Salton Sea NWR, walking through the native trees that line the large field adjacent to the visitor center, and spotted this beautiful woodpecker.
It is found in portions of Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and most of Mexico.
