Bigelow's Monkeyflower

Bigelow's monkeyflower is one of the early flowers in the spring and it continues on after most have died out. On my visit last Saturday, May 16, there were still numerous monkeyflowers in bloom, something I can't say about any other flower.
The pink flowers really stand out and are dominant in spots.

The plant starts out very small and then grows considerably.

This photo was taken early in the morning and so the flower appears less colorful.
The flower is trumpet shaped, with a narrow tube and a wide mouth. It is magenta or deep pink and has darker red, purple and yellow in the throat.

  1. This is the most amazing flower. It has the worst conditions for growing--the flat, hard, sandy areas--and the brightest colors and most durability. It's incredible!
