As we were driving to Churute Mangroves southeast of Guayaquil, Ecuador, we stopped at a house to get a guide for our canoe trip through the mangroves. While we waited in the car a different guide pointed to a pole and nearby wires and said "parakeets." I got out of the car to take some photos and was converged upon by neighborhood children eager to look at the camera.
It is a small parrot, sometimes called a pocket parrot, found in western Ecuador and northwestern Peru. It is light green overall with a bright green mask and pinkish beak and feet. Males have blue streaks (or eye shadow) behind the eyes and blue rumps. They are found in the pet trade.
My photo of you with the kids looking at your camera screen is one of my favorite photos I took on our trip.
