European Serin

The European serin is the smallest species of finch in Europe. It is found in mainland Europe and small portions of far north Africa. I saw one perched in a tree in the Tagus River Estuary south of Lisbon, Portugal at a distance and never got a very good look at it.

The male is much more yellow than the female, particularly the forehead, face, throat and breast. It has greenish-gray mask and white underneath. The female, which I did not see, has much less yellow.

  1. Did you (or our guide) know what it was when you were looking at it?
