In February Andrew and I took a walk on the beach at Jones Beach Island in Nassau County on Long Island, New York. We saw some beautiful ring-billed gulls. Non-breeding adults have tan streaking on the head and/or neck. Of course they have a black band around a yellow bill, yellow legs and a pale gray back.
Juvenile ring-billed gulls have a patchwork of brown and white with a dark bill that can be pink at the base.
I've previously seen ring-billed gulls in St. Augustine, Florida and Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico.
Makes me want to read "Jonathan Livingstone Seagull" again.
