The button brittlebush, also known as the rayless encilia, is a plant in the daisy family that has no ray flowers (or petals).
I found them off the Hayfield Road exit of the I-10 past Chiriaco Summit. Like a dandelion, the flower dries out and turns into a seed ball that is wind disbursed. I've not previously seen them in this fuzzy stage.
As the flowers turn to fuzz they become much more noticeable. |
An ancestor or a relative of the lawn-invasive dandelion?
