EQC: German Mission - Frankfurt (August thru December 1909)

Frankfurt am Main was the last and longest area served in by Edwin Q. Cannon on his mission. He had previously served 7 months in Tilsit, 3 months in Konigsberg, 5 ½ months in Leipzig, 1 ½ months in Magdeburg, 2 ½ months in Dessau and 2 ½ months in Bernburg. This particular post covers only about half of Ed’s time in Frankfurt, through the end of 1909. The remainder of his time in Frankfurt will be in a later post. Frankfurt am Main is on the Main River. “Furt,” in German, means a ford. So Frankfurt derives its name originally as a ford on the Main River used by the Franks. Frankfurt was located in the Prussian Province of Hesse-Nassau.

Ed took President Howell’s place as President of the Frankfurt Conference. Howell was sent to preside over the Hungarian Conference. For at least 20 days after he was appointed to take his place, Ed stayed with Howell and they worked together, Howell presumably trained Ed during that period in his new duties. There is no mention of Howell after September 4th, including no mention of his leaving. As conference president, Ed was responsible for determining where the missionaries in his conference served. So, for example, on October 29th, Ed returned to Frankfurt from Heidelberg and found four new missionaries from the States that needed to be placed. One was sent to Barmen, one to Darmstadt, one to Herne and one stayed in Frankfurt. It appears the mission president determined when a missionary was to transfer in or out of a conference. As conference president, Ed did a good deal of traveling around the conference to visit the missionaries. [Picture of Ed in Frankfurt]

On August 17th, Ed went to the American Consul to get his passport extended. Mr. Gunther, the consul, knew George Q. Cannon, Ed’s father well. They served in the U.S. Congress together.

Ed met his half-brother, Wilford Cannon, on August 25th in Cologne. They sent several days together before Wilford went on to Hamburg. Wilford served in the Swiss German Mission from 1909 to 1911 and did some significant traveling with Ed at the end of Ed’s mission. The first mention of that travel was on November 27th, when Ed wrote his brother, William, who controlled his finances, about “my proposed trip.”

Trouble with preaching in Germany reared its head again. On September 23rd, “Bro. Schick, who is working in Mannheim was taken by the police as he came out of Bible Class last night. It is probable that he will be banished. Bro. Grunder came up [to Frankfurt] from Mannheim to get out of their way.” On November 1st, quite awhile later, Ed received a letter “stating that Bro. Schick has been banished from Mannheim.” However, there does not seem to have been an urgency in it as Ed saw Bro. Schick in Mannheim on November 9th and 10th.

On October 3rd, Ed performed a marriage and on Christmas day Ed attended the funeral of a child and spoke, sang and dedicated the grave.

On October 29th, Ed gives a fascinating account of watching duels with swords in a Heidelberg restaurant. On New Year’s Eve, Ed describes the police quelling a demonstration that almost got some of them hurt and later that night he and other missionaries jumped off a street car and saved some people from a house fire.

Ed appears to have been staying at the same place as Brother Belnap, another missionary.

Stanger and Kirkham and I went out to the “Ila” again. Although the night was very dark, people were watching for any sign of the ships approach. There was a very bright star which most people took for a distant light. About 9:45 P.M. we heard a shout and ran out onto the balloon field just in time to see the huge ship sail over the balloon halls. To see that huge black body sailing through the night caused a funny sensation to come over me. Bro. Stanger and I ran through the crowd and got out to the large field in time to see the ship land.

Sister Paula Bubbel a nurse has been planning to go to America with a cousin of hers who has just been released from a mission. Her parents were in meeting looking for her and as soon as they found that she wasn’t there they went out. They threaten to get the police after her if she won’t go home with them. They drove her away from home when she joined the church. Some of the saints came to Distel’s and we spent a very enjoyable evening.

September 13, 1909 (Monday): (Frankfurt)

I spent the whole forenoon at home writing. We had an appointment to meet a sister at 2:15 P.M. to go to the “Ila” but it rained so hard that we couldn’t go. On the streetcar coming home I had gospel conversation with the motorman.

The hotel people had notified the police and I didn’t receive a telegram from them to pay the bill until 5 P.M. so it’s possible that they have had some trouble with the police already. We three went to Borkhardts’ for supper then we went to the depot and Bro. Koch left for Paris at 8:23 P.M.

October 29, 1909 (Friday): (Heidelberg, Frankfurt)

We all got out early this morning and went over to Hirschengasse and the owner of the restaurant, where the duels are held, let us go to one side of the hall and look through the window. As we got there two students were fighting. One had his face all covered with blood resulting from numerous small cuts. The contestants stand a swords length from each other and are not allowed to move from that position during a round. The swords are sharpened on one side from the point to about a half-length of the blade. The guarding and striking is all controlled by a wrist and arm movement. The only place left bare is the face and head of the duelist. The eyes are protected with heavy Iron goggles and the neck and upper part of the body is bandaged so that it is impossible to receive a cut there. Each round consists of from three to five strokes of the sword or in time from ten to thirty seconds, and there are sixty rounds in one duel, there are a few seconds between each round. The duelists fight the full sixty rounds unless the doctor pronounces one as being too badly wounded in which case the difference is considered as settled. Some of the duels are arranged by committees of the various clubs while others are caused through some difference arising between two students and are fought for satisfaction, the latter are much fiercer as the combatants throw their whole energy in to disabling each other. We saw six duels, two of them evidently for satisfaction judging by the interest taken in them by the other students and the fierceness with which they fought. One lasted about 10 or 15 seconds during which time one of the men lost a piece of his scalp over two inches square and the doctor pronounced him as being unable to fight longer. After eating dinner we returned to Frankfurt and I found four new men for this conference, they were Bros. Edwin S. Smith of Logan, Bro. Jno. H. Wittwers, William W. Owen of Willard, and Geo. W. Flamm of Rexburg, Ida., Bro. Alma Gold was also here on the “Durchreisë.” I appointed Bro. Flamm to Herne, Bro. Wittwers to Barmen, Bro. Owen to Darmstadt and Bro. Smith to Frankfurt. Luxemburg is a rather odd city and in some respects resembles Plauen if Vogt. in the way it is situated. It snowed all day long so that I couldn’t get a very good view of the general appearance of the place but it must be very beautiful in summer time. They have three or four very fine stone bridges. I left Luxemburg for Tréves at 4:20 P.M. and although it was dark I went through the town and saw the old Roman Gate Tradition says that Tréves is the oldest city of Europe having been built by Trebeta son of King Ninus of Assyria about the time of Abraham. November 29, 1909 (Monday): (Frankfurt)

I stayed home until after dinner working. All the fellows came over and we bought in together. Bro. Kirkham and I visited Herrn Schlur this afternoon. They have brought suit against Sister Remnitz to secure wages due Fränlein Schlur for the time she was in the sister’s employ. Schlur’s still seem to be interested in the gospel and I believe that when this trouble blows over they will be baptized. We visited an old music teacher then a painter after leaving Schlur’s. The painter made quite a “hit” with me. My visit with him started me thinking on an entirely to me, new line of thought.

November 30, 1909 (Tuesday): (Frankfurt, Hanau, Enkheim)

Naylor to go to Cologne to work with Bro. Shepherd. This afternoon Bro. Naylor and I went to Hanau to see a Lapidary about some stones which Mother gave me. He said that they were garnets and I left six of them to be cut to see how they will turn out. We rode back as far as Main Kur then went from there to Enkheim and visited Sister Wunderlich and ate supper with her. Bro. Naylor has been after one ever since he came here to go into the Framing business with him when he gets home. I always laughed about it and said yes in a rather joking manner, but tonight he put it up to me in such a convincing manner that he got me really interested and before we quit we made a verbal agreement to work it up together and go into it as a business so at last I have made up my mind what line I shall follow.

Wright’s and got him then went to the depot and met his Sister Mrs. Evans and her husband. We met the other elders and all ate supper at the “Salzhaus.” We elders went roller skating and Bro. West and Bro. and Sister Evans went to Schumann’s. We all met at the “Haust Wache” at 11:45 P.M. and Bros. Belnap and Thompson went to Humbert’s and the rest of us stayed on the street to see the old year out and the New Year in. There was very little excitement on the street at midnight there being so many policemen that no one dared make much of a demonstration about 10 after 12 the people began to bunch up in front of the post office and the police were forced to draw their swords in order to hold the crowd back in one or two instances. The police were evidently prepared to force the people off the streets for about 20 minutes after 12 a streetcar full of policemen stopped in front of the post office and cleared the center of the street driving the people on to the side wall. This was hardly accomplished when a company of mounted police came out of the post office yard and started to drive the people in opposite directions from the door of the post office on both sides of the Zeil (street on which the post office stands). They would ride into the crowd at a gallop driving men, women and children before them. We were standing a short distance from the post when this started and the horsemen rode into the crowd with such force that we were almost trodden under foot. It came as such a surprise that Mrs. Evans became very frightened and it was barely possible for us to escape being trampled on by people and horses through crowding into a small side street. As we got into this street the police charged into it and we had to form a ring around Mrs. Evans and almost carry her to get away. Bro. and Sister Evans went to Bro. Wright’s room to stay and we elders went to Bro. Humbert’s per a promise which we had made him. As we rode through the Glanbourg strasse we noticed flames bursting from a window we jumped off the car and went and kicked on the door until a man opened it. The fire was in the second story and this man and ran up the stairs and found the people on the landing shouting for light and water. I happened to have a box of matches with me and we found our way to the kitchen and after filling two buckets with water I lit the gas and in about 3 minutes the fire was out. There were some men living there, but they had been frightened by the great quantity of smoke but when we went in and drew the water for them they carried it into the other room and threw it on the fire. We had quite a pleasant time the few minutes we were at Humbert’s. It was about 3 A.M. when we got home. Bro. West stayed with me. I had about the most interesting time of my mission to close the old year with.
