Speckle-Fronted Weaver

I have been trying to identify this bird and I have tentatively decided it is a speckle-fronted weaver, although I have no confidence I have identified it correctly. We found it in Buffalo Springs National Reserve in northern Kenya in a tree full of weaver nests.

In particular, I've focused on the mustache and it appears the other relatively close matches would be the sociable weaver and scaly-fronted weaver.

The speckle-fronted weaver is found from Senegal, in West Africa, east to Ethiopia and south to northern Tanzania. It has tiny white dots on a black crown, a white face and a black mustache.

  1. It's hard to believe this comes from the same family as the brilliantly-colored golden palm weaver.
