Long-Tailed Fiscal

The long-tailed fiscal is a bird in the shrike family. It is found in southern Somalia, southern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania. We saw this bird in Nairobi National Park on the outskirts of Nairobi. It appears the one we saw may be a juvenile. It has a black crown and face, black wings, black bill, black tail, a white spot on the primaries, a white rump and white underparts. It feeds primarily on grasshoppers and beetles.

Long-tailed fiscal. Picture found here. Because my pictures are poor, I'm using someone else's better photo to illustrate it.

  1. With that hook-ish beak, he looks like a very distant relative of a hawk. I was expecting him to be a small rodent eater.
