Scrub Tanager

The scrub tanager is found in the Andes of Colombia (all three cordilleras) down into Ecuador. Wikipedia has two sentences on it and a photo. Birds of the World, a subscription site, has substantially more.

Males and females mostly look similar, except that females are duller. They are described as "relatively dull," compared to other tanagers, but I think they are beautiful. They have a rufous crown and upper neck, a gray-black mask, a silvery-blue upper back and underparts, a mixture of turquoise, blue, green and black on the wings and tail, and a light rufous-orange at it lores.

I saw scrub tanagers at both Tinamu Reserve and Montezuma Rainforest Lodge, but only a few at both places.

  1. It's amazing how many birds are so brightly colored in Colombia. This is another beautiful one.
