At the end of May I was in southeastern Arizona and went up Box Canyon on the flank of the Santa Rita Mountains with my guide, Jake Thompson. We went up to what they refer to as the first bridge, which is over a dry ravine, and waited for dark. While we waited a couple of lesser nighthawks flew by us, as identified by Jake, vocalizing as they went. It was too dark for photos and they were too fast anyway. I remember seeing nighthawks as a youth, but don't really recall seeing any for decades, except the few I've seen birding the last few years.
