Nazca Booby

On March 24, 2022 we were sailing near Vicente Roca Point at the northwestern tip of Isabela Island in the Galapagos Islands. High up on a cliff we saw some Nazca boobys, the only ones we saw in the Galapagos. The Nazca booby has a yellow iris, an orange and pinkish beak, black facial skin that looks like a mask, gray feet, white plumage with black tips on the wings and tail. It was considered a subspecies of the masked booby until 2002. It was separated because it is distinct genetically and behaviorally.

An illustration from Birds of the World.

Range from Birds of the World. It is found in the eastern Pacific from the islands in Baja California, to the Galapagos Islands and Isla de la Plata in Ecuador and Malpelo in Colombia.
