Lilac-Crowned Amazon

The lilac-crowned amazon is a parrot native to western Mexico, mostly along the Pacific coast, but the eastern side of the Gulf of California, not the Baja California peninsula.

It is listed as endangered by the IUCN as of 2014. However, more and more are thriving in the U.S., particularly in the San Gabriel Valley and Orange County of Southern California. I was visiting Irvine Regional Park in Orange County last weekend and saw and heard a number of them. They are vary loud and boisterous.

It is green with a maroon forehead and a lilac-blue crown, nape and neck. The beak and legs are a pale brown/gray, the cheeks and ear coverts are a greenish/yellow.

  1. Is their presence in California the result of migration or escaped/released pets?
