We have a grove of oak trees in Live Oak Canyon near our home and acorn woodpeckers, as the name implies, are commonly found there. In fact there are a couple of dead oak trees that I regularly see them in. I assume they are caching acorns in holes that have been pecked into the dead oak trees.
They are fun to watch and make lots of noise. In fact, I just read that the call of Woody Woodpecker was modeled after the acorn woodpecker call.

I love their red topknots, but those eyes look like something out of a horror movie.
