Bald Eagle - Alaska

We had a few encounters with bald eagles on our trip to Alaska and I finally got a good photo of one - I had a horrible photo of one in Florida I took through a tinted bus window several years ago. Our best encounter occurred while we were leaving Seward, on the Kenai Peninsula, for a boat trip into Kenai Fjords National Park. A bald eagle was perched on a structure we passed in port as the boat was leaving.

Several days later our cruise ship docked in Juneau and we took a float plane over to Chichagof Island to view grizzly bears. We were seated near a water fall in Pavlov Harbor, off of Freshwater Bay, when a bald eagle flew over us.

Finally, when our cruise ship docked in Ketchikan we took a float plane to Anan Bay, just a few miles from Admiralty Island, but on the mainland, to view black bears. We saw a number of bald eagles there, both mature and immature. One immature bald eagle was perched on a rock in Anan Creek. We encountered another immature bird perched in a tree just off the trail from us.

Beautiful, beautiful birds.

  1. I love the first two pictures. White-headed eagles are so majestic. It was so exciting to see them in the wild!
