Northern Pintail

I saw my first northern pintail ducks at Merritt Island NWR in northeastern Florida in 2014 and did not see any more until late last year at Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad and early this year at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach. The breeding male is particularly beautiful. It has a long neck with a white stripe, a white breast, a bronze/brown head, a bluish bill, gray upperparts and sides, intermixed with black, and a very long tail which gives it its name.

The female is a "scalloped and mottled light brown" with a light brown/gray head and gray bill. It has a much shorter tail, but does have a very long neck.

  1. Its long, slender neck gives it such a graceful appearance. Beautiful.
