After posting on the northern cinnamon teal in April of last year I had wonderful encounters with it at Salton Sea State Park and at the San Joaquin Wetlands in January of this year.
The male has a deep brownish/red body, a long black bill, a red eye and a black back and rear. In flight it has white on the underside of its wings and green secondaries and a powder blue shoulder. It is one of the most beautiful ducks.
White on the underneath of the wing. |
A portion of the green and powder blue on the top of the wing is showing. |
Females have a brown body with feathers rimmed in off-white, a long black bill, black eyes and faint dark eyeline.
That's a serious sunburn.
