Differences Between Snow Goose and Ross's Goose

Yesterday Judy and I visited Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale and got very close to several snow geese and Ross's geese. I got several photos of both species next to each other providing a great comparison.
The snow goose (left) is larger than Ross's goose (right).

The snow goose (back) has a larger (longer) bill than Ross's goose (front) and has a curved base and black grin patch (in this case Ross's goose has just a thin black line). Ross's goose also often has a blue/gray color at the base of the bill and a rounder head.

  1. They must be pretty close cousins because they like to seem to hang out together. Is there such a thing as a crossbred Ross's Snow Goose?

    1. Yes, I would have no clue as to how to come to that conclusion, but I've seen categories in bird lists for them.
