Long-Crested Eagle

Near Entebbe, Uganda, just north of Lake Victoria and the Mabamba Swamp, I did some birding with a guide, Wilson, on a hill below Nkima Forest Lodge. We got several views of the long-crested eagle. It would perch in the top of a tree and scour the ground for prey. We closely approached the birds several times, trying to get as close as possible for good photos. After five or six similar approaches we got relatively close. None of my photos of the flying eagles were very good.
It is blackish brown, has a black tail barred with gray and has yellow iris, cere and feet.

It gets its name from the shaggy crest of feathers that grow out of the rear of the crown which when held erect lean forward over its forehead.
It is found near forest edges and moist woodlands, particularly near grasslands, marches, rivers and streams. It is uncommon to fairly common.

Range map from Birds of the World. It is found over large portions of Africa.

  1. The bird in the photo in the top of the tree near the end of the post needs to comb his top knot.
