Glossy Black Thrush

The glossy black thrush is found in the Andes Mountains of South America at elevations between 4,900 feet and 9,200 feet. Males are black with an orange bill, feet, legs and eye-ring. Females are brown with dull yellow bare spots.
The orange eye-ring shows in this photo, but not the next one.

I saw one male near the top of Montezuma Mountain in Colombia at over 8,000 feet. Birds of the World notes that they rarely go outside of their cover which makes it hard to detect visually. Fortunately, this one emerged in plain sight near where we set up for breakfast and I got a great view of it. There are a relatively small number of observations on Birds of the World (17,028) and photos (789).

They are found from Venezuela to northwestern Argentina.

  1. Wow, that orange beak and those orange legs really pop in contrast to the dull feathers.
