The western grebe is black and white with a slender neck and red eyes. It has a dark cap that extends below the eye and a dull yellowish-green bill. It carries its chicks on it back after they hatch and has elaborate courtship rituals.
Note the chick on its back (just behind the neck). |
I saw my first western grebes recently at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.
I love that it carries its chicks on its back. Do you know if that is both the father and mother duck that does that?
