Eared Grebe

The eared grebe, also known as the black-necked grebe, has similar coloring to the western grebe, including a red eye surrounded by dark cap feathers. However, in breeding plumage it looks like the grebe has taken a triple dose of LSD and is freaking out. A fan of ochre colored feathers that look like they have just blasted out of a cannon emanate from evil looking luminating red eyes. I had a difficult time getting focused photos of these grebes and the only reason I can think of is that the eye throws off the focus sensor.

In addition to the eye freak show, the plumage has transformed into dark black and chestnut with Elvis hair.
