The zenaida dove is found on the islands of the Caribbean and on the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is medium sized and brown, similar to a mourning dove, but is a little smaller, has a shorter, more rounded tail, is a little more darkly colored, has a purplish gloss on the sides of the neck, black spots on the secondary feathers and a white band on the trailing edge of the secondary feathers visible both in flight and when the wing is folded.

I saw this zenaida dove on the island of Antigua inside Nelson's Dockyard.
The head in this photo is a little blurry, but it gives a better view of the pink legs and the purple on the neck. |
