Golden-Naped Tanager

The golden-naped tanager (Chalcothraupis ruficervix) is found from Colombia to Bolivia in a little broader and longer band than the Choco-endemics, but still has quite a limited distribution. There are six subspecies, including C. r. leucotis, found in western Ecuador, which we saw.

It is described as turquoise blue with black facial masking, a buffy orange patch on the rear crown and a buffy vent.

A big difference in size with the flame-rumped tanager on the right.

  1. What beautiful shades of blue--like rich turquoise stone touched with bits of lapis.
