Northern Crested Caracara

Several years ago I encountered my first caracaras in Mexico. In a recent trip to Texas in Burnet County, on the way from Marble Falls to Balcones Canyonlands NWR, we saw one on the side of the road with some black vultures. I was very excited to see another one, particularly with no expectation of seeing one.
This source, focused on the caracara in Texas, notes that the caracara often scans for vultures in its search for food. It also notes that there are breeding caracaras in Florida, Arizona and Texas, but that Texas has by far the most breeders.

  1. Very distinctive with its very vertical posture. It was fun to see one.

    1. Agree with your description of very vertical posture. That would be noticeable even from a long distance. Elongated looking bird for sure.

  2. Agree with your description of very vertical posture. Elongated looking bird for sure. Especially for a (somewhat) bird of prey. Way cool to see them in the states though. Like the occasional Jaguars or Ocelots.
