North American Porcupine - Texas

Less than a month ago I saw four porcupines in a tree on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake.  Just a few weeks later Judy and I were driving the Auto Route in Buffalo Lake NWR west of Canyon, Texas (which is 20 miles south of Amarillo) and I saw another porcupine up in a bare tree from quite a distance, just as I'd seen on antelope island.
I walked over to the tree and got a closer look. It was not as cold as it had been in Utah and so I got views of the porcupines face, although it was not moving much.

Later we left to do other things, including visit Palo Duro Canyon State Park which was closed due to reaching their visitor limitation, so we drove back to Buffalo Lake. We saw the porcupine in the same tree, this time with another person near the tree to the side watching it. Judy and I both got out of the car to view it and I took a few more photos.

  1. In a weird way, he looks kinda cuddly. The spines look like they should be plushy fur, but those claws are hard to imagine away.
