The last time I was in Live Oak Canyon, Sunday morning, I spotted another new species I'd not seen there before. It was a northern flicker. There are two subspecies in or near our area: the western red-shafted and coastal red-shafted flicker. I'm not finding anything that describes the differences between the two subspecies or that shows the different ranges.
Red on the underside of the tail is visible.
