The Indian palm squirrel or three-striped palm squirrel is found in India south of the Vindhyas (a mountain range in west central India) and in Sri Lanka. It has also been introduced into some other countries.
Indian palm squirrel in Polonnaruwa. |
It is about the size of a large chipmunk. Its back is gray/brown with three white stripes that run from its head to its tail. It has a white belly and a tail with interspersed longish black and white hair. It has small triangular ears.
We saw the photographed squirrel in Polonarruwa near a tree on the edge of a dirt parking lot near some ruins. We probably saw a few more of the squirrels, but did not get photos of them.
