The white-bellied sea eagle was the fourth species of eagle we saw in Sri Lanka and the third species we saw in Bundala National Park, which is right on the ocean. We saw two of them flying together, but unfortunately, did not see them perched.
White-bellied sea eagle in flight over Bundala NP. |
It is found in India and Sri Lanka through southeast Asia and down to Australia.
It has a white head, rump and underparts and black flight feathers on the wings clearly seen in my photos. It has a large hooked bill which is blue/gray. The legs and feet are yellow or gray with large black talons. It has a dark or slate-gray back and wings.
Watching these large eagles soar effortlessly over the ocean was a magical experience. Their flights looked choreographed.
