The pale-fronted toque macaque, or wet zone toque macaque, is one of three subspecies of toque macaque endemic to Sri Lanka. Contrasted with the common toque macaque, it has a longer toque "hat" or swirl of hair on its head and a little darker coat.

This subspecies is found more in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka, but is also found just outside of Kandy in the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, where we saw them.

We watched this troop of monkeys for quite some time - one of our best monkey viewing experiences ever. As we sat or stood still, we had the monkeys quite close to us, at times close enough to reach out and touch.
This monkey experience was one of my favorite moments on the trip. Part of what made it so great is that there weren't a lot of other people around, just one or two here and there who shared the experience with us.
