Holy Trinity Church - Berat, Albania

Within the walls of Berat Castle is the extraordinarily beautiful Holy Trinity Church, an Orthodox church, built in the 14th century. It stands beneath some inner castle walls overlooking windswept grasses and a great view of Berat and the surrounding vicinity.

Time has taken its toll on the structure and nature is beginning to take over. Grasses and plants are growing out of its walls and in its roof, evidence of moisture.

That moisture has seeped inside and all but destroyed most of the beautiful frescoes. It is quite a contrast to the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, also within the castle walls, that has retained its beautiful frescoes, but does not have the beautiful outward architecture and location.

  1. I think there must be churches like this all over Albania in those ancient fortresses we saw overlooking so many small towns. Wouldn't it be fun to wander around and explore some of them? So sad that so many priceless treasures are going to ruin because of the poverty of the country.
