The booted eagle, which we saw in Portugal, is an eagle I'd never heard of. It has a fairly broad presence in Africa and India (non-breeding ground) and much more spread out presence in Europe (although it is found throughout the Iberian Peninsula) and Asia.
Booted eagle range from Wikipedia. Dark green is year-round, dark blue is non-breeding and light green is bredding. |
We saw an adult booted eagle sitting on a nest, saw it flying, and got photos of a fledgling in the nest in the vicinity of the Tagus River Estuary.
There are two plumage forms. The light morph is light gray with a darker head and flight feathers. The dark morph, which was saw, has mid-brown plumage with dark gray flight feathers.
No pictures of its dark boots? Bummer.
