Orange-Bellied Euphonia

The orange-bellied euphonia was once thought to be a tanager but the 24 species of euphonia are now identified as finches.

The orange-bellied euphonia has a pretty extensive range in Venezuela, Guyana, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, portions of western Brazil and far away from the others in eastern Brazil.
Range of orange-bellied euphonia from Wikipedia.
The male is yellow below with a yellow-orange belly, black-blue above, including the throat, with a yellow cap that goes down to the mostly dark bill.  The female is predominantly olive-green all over. I saw at least one male at the Mashpi Amagusa Preserve. eBird notes 51,268 observations and 1,675 photos, one of the top four which was taken at Amagusa Preserve.
As I look through photos of the various euphonias many of them look very much alike.

  1. This is a stunning bird with the complementary colors of yellow and purple, but the best thing about it is its name. It could almost be mistaken for "euphoria" (which is what I did at first glance).
