Polonnaruwa - Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa is an ancient town and archaeological site in central Sri Lanka and site of the film "Monkey Kingdom" put out by Disney in 2015. When we visited in March 2019 we'd been to Anuradhapura the day before and I was getting burned out on ancient archaeology and I was not as gung ho as I'd been the day before. Therefore, I didn't see what I probably could have seen.

This is the wildlife we did see in a short visit to Polonnaruwa:
This Asian water monitor was seen at an outdoor restaurant we visited on the outskirts of Polonnaruwa. It was gigantic and one of the neatest sightings of our entire trip.

Common kingfisher at the restaurant on the outskirts of Polonnaruwa.

Tufted gray langur - sitting on a wall of one of the ruins.

Indian palm squirrel

Yellow-billed babbler

Gray heron among the ruins.

  1. I do love the name, Polonnaruwa. It rolls off the tongue and sounds very exotic. It was really fun to watch "Monkey Island" after having been there too.
