Western Red-Tailed Hawk

Yesterday Judy accompanied me to Corn Springs. We got there about 7:00 a.m. just as the sun was coming up. As we got out of the car, I noticed a hawk standing on top of a decapitated palm tree. I took some photos, then started walking nearer to it, stopping to take photos at intervals along the way.
My first photo, standing next to the car.

To my surprise the hawk never flew. We kind of circled around it, then get right next to the palm, and it stayed put.

Later, we walked back to our car to drive further into the Chuckwalla mountains. As we did so, I noticed the hawk on a lower decapitated palm tree. I stopped the car and started taking some more photos.

Then I got what may be may favorite red-tailed hawk photo yet, one of it as it is just taking flight.
Overall, I think I took over 160 photos of this hawk (one of the blessings of a digital camera).

  1. You need to include a cropped close-up of the hawk's talons from the final picture. They are impressive! I think that's one of my favorites of all your bird photos.
