Sanjay pointed out a small owl in a tree in the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe National Park. I did not write down the name, but I believe it was an oriental scops owl which is widely distributed across eastern and southern Asia.
It is yellow eyed with ear tufts and has two color morphs: gray and rufus. When disturbed they may freeze with their eyes half close, like this one is doing.
Aw, I want one! It can live in our big pine tree. What do you think?
