Blood Orange

About six years ago we planted a blood orange tree on the hill in our back yard. It is below the view from our house and sprinkler problems almost killed it the first year.  An Asian pear tree next to it died and a grapefruit tree next to it is providing feral fruit. Recently I was pruning the citrus trees around our house, which are doing well, and took a look down our hill and noticed the blood orange tree had quite a bit of fruit on it. So I went down and picked a few oranges and peeled and ate one. I was shocked at how good it was. I took several up to the house and juiced them and swooned over the sweet dark liquid produced.

So I went down and picked all of the remaining oranges and juiced them all. My recollection of blood orange juice was that it was very tart. This juice was quite sweet and very dark, grape juice dark, with a taste much richer than regular orange juice, almost a combination of grape juice and orange juice. I'm going to start paying more attention to this tree see if we can increase the yield.
Thick red pulp in the juicer.
Captured juice in the bottom of the juicer.
Blood oranges and blood orange juice. Also note the very dark skins on some of the oranges.

  1. This is something I never see in Montana, not even shipped in from California. Looks tasty!
