There are two subspecies of white-headed buffalo weaver. One is found in Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda and northern Kenya and the other is in Kenya and Tanzania. Its name comes from following cape buffalo where it feeds on the insects the buffalo disturb. It has a white head and underparts and white band in its wings. It has an orange/red rump and undertail coverts and dark brown thighs.
