Dubrovnik was the most expensive place we encountered in the Balkans. This was particularly evident in restaurant food prices. We looked around quite a bit, looking at menus. We never really did find a restaurant that grabbed us. Because of its location right on the water, many of the restaurants focus on fish and we finally settled on a primarily fish restaurant, Restaurant Ark A, just downhill from the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
We ordered some grilled vegetables. What we got was pretty much what we got each time we ordered grilled vegetables in the Balkans (which we did a number of times): zucchini and eggplant. I'm not complaining, it is actually quite good and it is what is in season. It also came with some grilled red pepper, olives and cheese. In fact, when we got back to the U.S., I duplicated this several times. I particularly love the grilled zucchini. It is so much better grilled than boiled.

Judy got some grilled squid. It came with some olives and potatoes. Nice flavor and not rubbery. They do squid and octopus very nicely in the Balkans.

Finally, we ordered mixed fish: a whole (small) grilled sea bass, a hake filet, a grilled langostino, grilled squid, spinach and potato and a mussel. The langostino was overcooked and had a horrible flavor. The hake was seasoned well, was moist and was very good. The sea bass had kind of a weird, strong flavor, not as good other sea bass I've had. The meal was okay. Nothing to get particularly excited about.

At least from what we saw, Dubrovnik is a fish town. I was a little disappointed that we did not find something a little better.
My squid was very good, but your fist was mediocre. Maybe we needed to move farther away from the tourist areas.
ReplyDeleteI know you like to try unusual food, Bob, but I sincerely hope Judy doesn't really mean your fist was mediocre.
DeleteMy knuckles are still sore.
