The tangelo is a citrus fruit hybrid of a tangerine and either a pomelo or a grapefruit.
Like a tangerine, they have a loose skin and are easier to peel than an orange. The Minneola tangelo is a cross between a Duncan grapefruit and a Dancy tangerine and is named after Minneola, Florida.
They were introduced in 1931 by the USDA. It is also called the Honeybell. The peel is a very distinctive and bright reddish-orange.
My partner recently brought some in to work as a gift from a packing house that he represents. Despite their beautiful look and easiness to peel, I found that the taste was pretty unremarkable.
It was relatively juicy, but was not particularly sweet or sour. It would be nice on a hike or if you were hot and thirsty, but other fruit are much more interesting from a taste standpoint. The information for this post came from Wikipedia.
