The California poppy is native to grasslands and open areas in the western United States from southern Washington through Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, northern Mexico and Nevada. I have seen many as plantings around freeways, but I only recall seeing them in their natural setting on one occasion: hiking the Pacific Crest Trail last year in the grasslands between Montezuma Valley Road and Warner Springs.
It is the state flower of California and April 6th is designated as California Poppy Day.
It has blue-green foliage (closer view)

The California poppy has flowers with four, silky-textured petals, ranging in color from yellow to orange. Below is a sampling of flowers:
I love the reversal of these petals, from yellow outside and orange inside,
to these petals, yellow outside and orange inside.
