Black Caiman

The black caiman lives in slow moving rivers and lakes in the Amazon river basin of northern South America. It has a bony ridge over red eyes and black, scaly skin.

We saw this caiman on a night boat ride on the Madre de Dios River of Peru, below Puerto Maldonado. The black caiman is a night hunter. So this picture was taken with a telephoto lense and a flash. I love the artificial color and the reflection on the water.

We also saw a black caiman at a distance on Lake Sandoval during a canoe ride, but never got close enough for a picture. This caiman can get up to 16.5 feet long, although most adults reach 10 to 14 feet long.
