Blue-Headed Coucal

We were in the Mabamba Swamp off Lake Victoria near Entebbe, Uganda and saw a lone blue-headed coucal. It is one of three subspecies, ssp fischeri, which is found from Sudan to DRC, Uganda, western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and northwestern Tanzania. It is found in wet locations like swamps, marshes, papyrus and river banks and forest edges. Birds of the World specifically notes that it is very common around Lake Victoria. That all describes where we were perfectly, in a papyrus swamp on the edge of Lake Victoria, riding in a boat.

Its tail is black with a greenish or bronze gloss.
It has a blue-glossed black color from the forehead to the upper back which gives it its name, and which shows up well in this photo. This photo also shows the whitish to pale buff on the underparts, the red iris, the black bill and grayish black legs and feet.

The wings are reddish brown, which shows up in this photo. It also shows the black lower back and rump.

Range map from Birds of the World. Note, I only mentioned where one ssp is found and this map shows where all three are found.

  1. No camouflage as it perches among those green grasses. Those red eyes are a bit creepy.
